Reading the prices…
How the numbers are made, and where they come from
How the numbers are made
Where the prices come from
Three stores' published prices, for every printing, once a day. On file: 2026-07-02 to 2026-09-29 from MTGJSON; 2026-09-30 to 2026-10-01 from Scryfall; 2026-10-02 to 2026-10-06 from MTGJSON; 2026-10-07 to 2026-10-07 from Scryfall; 2026-10-08 to 2026-10-16 from MTGJSON; 2026-10-17 to 2026-10-22 from Scryfall. Latest: 2026-10-22.
- Scryfall's daily Default Cards file: TCGplayer's market price in US dollars (nonfoil, foil, etched foil), Cardmarket's price in euros (nonfoil, foil) and Cardhoarder's price in tix for Magic Online. The site's collector downloads it once a day with its own User-Agent, as Scryfall asks, and never contacts a store. Scryfall says its prices suit tracking trends and general estimates.
- MTGJSON's AllPrices (MIT License) for the days before the collector began, and for days it missed: its last 90 days of the same stores' retail prices, linked to Scryfall's printings through MTGJSON's identifier table. A day from it is marked MTGJSON wherever its source is shown; it only fills dates with no prices on file. Read 2026-09-30: 89 days from 2026-07-02 to 2026-09-30, 88 of them added; 108,398 of its 112,801 entries matched a Scryfall printing. Read 2026-10-07: 89 days from 2026-07-08 to 2026-10-06, 5 of them added; 108,428 of its 112,835 entries matched a Scryfall printing. Read 2026-10-17: 89 days from 2026-07-08 to 2026-10-06, 0 of them added; 108,428 of its 112,835 entries matched a Scryfall printing. Read 2026-10-17: 88 days from 2026-07-19 to 2026-10-17, 8 of them added; 108,704 of its 113,183 entries matched a Scryfall printing. On the day both sources were read (September 30, 2026) they gave the same TCGplayer nonfoil price for 95.6% of printings and prices within 2% for 99.3%.
- Dates with no prices on file: 2026-08-06, 2026-08-29, 2026-10-14. Nothing is filled in for them: a window that lands on one uses the closest earlier date, at most 3 days back, and says which date it used.
Changes and windows
Every change compares two dates on file: the latest, and the latest date on or before 1, 7, 30 or 90 days earlier (a year once the archive holds one). Each column says its date; the source of each date is in the line under the page title.
change = price on the latest date - price on the earlier date
percent = change / price on the earlier date x 100, to one decimal
A card's price is its lowest price: the lowest TCGplayer market price that day among its printings that the site's price rule counts (paper cards you can play, serialized ones aside, and not a printing whose TCGplayer price is under a twentieth of a Cardmarket price over 20 euros; a reversible Secret Lair printing, art on both sides, is left out, as the card pages list it on its own), any finish, printings already out first. It is the price a deck page uses for a card with no printing picked. A printing is priced at its own finish. A deck's total is each card's lowest price times its count (maybe-board left out), added up on each date; your collection's total is each copy in your paper binders (proxies and Arena or Magic Online binders left out) at its own printing and finish, for the copies the history files hold.
Risers and fallers
For one source and one window: every printing and finish with a price on both dates, ranked by percent change, largest first for risers and most negative first for fallers; ties go to the larger amount. The top 10 are shown, with the amount beside the percent. Left out: serialized printings, and for TCGplayer and Cardmarket, printings that aren't paper cards you can play (memorabilia, oversized, gold-bordered, playtest and digital ones).
kept when both prices >= the price floor ($1, $5, $25 or $100; the same numbers in euros or tix)
The defaults are what a price list usually means: TCGplayer market prices, nonfoil printings, 7 days, every format, a $1 floor on both dates, and steady prices only. A steady price has a price on each of the last 30 days on file and changed on at least 5 of them. A printing that sells rarely keeps one price for weeks and then moves all at once on a single sale (on September 28, 2026 one such foil went from $0.50 to $77.25), so its percent says little about the card. Two switches show them: foil and etched too, and thin prices too. The line above the lists says which are on.
Cards in a format: legal or restricted there in the latest legality snapshot. Captain Comp: legal in Captain's Comp tier under Captain's own lists (the pool is every card legal or restricted in Vintage, less the banned list, the commander cost class and the Reserved List). My collection works in your browser from the history files, TCGplayer prices only, each printing and finish once however many copies you have.
Format indexes
For each format: the cards legal (or restricted) in it in the latest legality snapshot, each at its lowest price that day.
total = sum of the lowest prices of the format's cards priced that day
median = the middle of those prices (the mean of the two middle ones for an even count)
A card without a price that day is left out of that day, so a new set's first prices can raise the count and the total at once; the table under the charts has the count for every day. The index uses today's list of legal cards for every day: it is the value of today's card pool over time, not the format as it was then.
History files
The page ships a summary (every list above, precomputed) and 4 history files, split by a hash of the card's name so a card page reads one. For each card: its lowest price on the chart dates (daily for the last eight days on file, weekly back to 13 weeks, then every four weeks back to a year; a card never at $1 or more on those dates keeps the window dates only) and its EDHREC rank; for each printing worth $1 or more on a window date (or 1 euro or 1 tix today): its TCGplayer prices on the window dates, and today's Cardmarket and Cardhoarder prices beside them. Printings under $1 on every window date have no row, and a watched printing without one says so.
The reprint radar
A printing appears when it is new since the day before and Scryfall marks it a reprint (a card that already had a printing) and it is a paper printing. Before the collector's daily diff began, the radar holds the printings on file in the first snapshot whose release date is within 30 days before it or still to come. Beside each: the lowest and highest TCGplayer price among the card's other printings that day (the price rule's printings), which is what the floor reads.
The legality changelog
Each day's legality in every format Scryfall lists, Commander's Game Changer flag and Captain's status (Comp legal, Cracked only, outside the pool, and each Captain list) are compared with the day before. Only changes are kept, dated the day the collector saw them, which can be a few days after an announcement. A set's cards turning legal as it comes out (a printing released within the week before or two weeks after) is one line per set; many cards turning legal or leaving one format on one day with no new set behind them is one line per format; every ban, unban, restriction, Game Changer change and Captain change is its own line.
EDHREC rank
EDHREC's rank as Scryfall publishes it on each card: 1 is the card in the most Commander decks on EDHREC. The rank moves list compares the first and last dates on file among cards ranked in the top 5,000 on either date. It counts Commander decks only.
Your watchlist
Kept in this browser (IndexedDB, with the rest of My Stuff), never sent anywhere. With it, the prices it showed the last time you opened it, and the date of those prices, so the next visit lists what changed.
Price alerts
An alert is a mark on one card (its lowest price, as above), on one printing in one finish, or on every card of a wishlist in Collection. Four kinds: at or below a price, at or above a price, down by a percent and up by a percent, a percent measured from the price on the day the alert is set (a wishlist card: from its price the first time it is checked). Set one from a card page's price history, a watchlist row's “price alert” or “new price alert” under the watchlist.
change = (price now - price when set) / price when set x 100, to the hundredth; down is reached at minus the mark or lower, up at the mark or higher
The check runs in this browser against the site's own daily prices (TCGplayer market via Scryfall, the latest day built into the site): on any page of the site that reads the card list, once for each day of prices, and again when an alert is set or “check now” is pressed. A target is logged when it reaches its mark, with the day it was seen, its price and the date of that price, and a notice says so; it is logged again only after its price has moved back past the mark. Nothing is sent anywhere: push, email and text alerts would need a server, so there are none, and an alert shows only while a page of the site is open.
History as a file
“Download the history” on a card page saves that card's history as a spreadsheet file (CSV): its lowest price on every date on file, and each printing's TCGplayer prices, by finish, on the window dates. The watchlist downloads the same for everything on it (a card at its lowest price, a printing in its own finish, a deck's and the collection's cards with their copies), or one deck's or the collection's row on its own. Each row is one series on one date, with the card, the series, the set and number, the finish, the date, the price in US dollars, its source (via Scryfall, or via MTGJSON before the collector's first day) and, for the watchlist, the item it came from. Only the cards asked for go in a file, never the archive in bulk, since Scryfall's terms don't allow repackaging its price data. A watched printing the history files don't hold gives no rows.
Facts only: prices are what the stores published on those dates, not offers, and nothing here says what a price will do.
About Market
What it does
- A watchlist kept in this browser: any card (at its lowest price), any printing and finish, a deck from My Stuff, or your whole collection, each with its change over a day, a week, 30 days and 90 days in dollars and percent, and a small chart.
- Changed since you last looked: the watchlist remembers what it showed on your last visit and lists what moved since.
- The top 10 risers and fallers for TCGplayer (dollars), Cardmarket (euros) and Cardhoarder (tix), over 1, 7, 30 or 90 days, in every format, in Captain Comp and in your own collection, with a price floor so penny cards don't fill the percent lists.
- Format indexes: the total and the median of each format's cards at their lowest price, day by day, Captain Comp included, with the card count for every day.
- A reprint radar: new printings of cards that already had one, grouped by set with release dates, and what the card's other printings cost that day.
- A legality changelog: every ban, unban, restriction, Commander Game Changer change and Captain change, dated the day it appeared, and new sets turning legal.
- Every card page gets its price and EDHREC rank history.
- Price alerts, each with the day it crossed its mark, and price history files per item.
- The week's moves of the printings you own, on the home page, by printing, never by name.
Why
Price sites show today's price, and history often sits behind a subscription or on one store's own page. A free daily archive keeps what the stores publish, so the site can show how prices moved next to your own cards and decks, with Captain's own index. Numbers only: what a price change means is yours to decide.
Asked for by players
- Pick cards to track and see what's going up and down, with the top 10 risers and fallers. shipped
- A whole deck or your collection as a watchlist. shipped
- A Captain Comp index. shipped
- Alerts on your phone when a watched price moves. That needs a server; the page shows what changed since your last visit instead.
On the list because players asked for them in public feature requests and forums, September 2026.
Changelog
- The source note is one line with its details behind it; notices are the site's standard notice. The collection row names its basis beside Collection's own count.
- The home page's "your cards that moved this week" matches the Market's movers to the printings you own by Scryfall id and finish, so a row never shows another printing beside "you own".
- Price alerts in the Watchlist tab, each with the day it crossed its mark; price history files for the watchlist and each item in it.
- New: Market. A watchlist of cards, printings, decks and your collection with changes over 1, 7, 30 and 90 days; risers and fallers by source, window, format and price floor; format indexes with Captain Comp; a reprint radar; a legality changelog; and price and EDHREC rank history on every card page. Prices from July 2, 2026: MTGJSON's 90 days, then the daily collector.
